A “colossal” debt, that’s what Michel Barnier says he found when he arrived in Matignon. The Prime Minister who, on several occasions, questioned the financial balance sheet of the previous government. So it was with a touch of exasperation in his voice that Emmanuel Macron answered a question about his responsibility in the increase in deficits. “Where I am, I ensure the independence and stability of the country. I’ve been doing it for seven years through the crises and let’s not forget everything we did during these crises… I see some who said that we were doing too little, reproaching us today for having done too much at all! I try to be consistent. »  

It is not easy to remain in his role as president who lets the prime minister govern when the policy pursued over the past seven years is under attack, says Valérie Gas, from RFI’s political service.
